These illustrations were originally part of the children’s books illustrated by famous Nantucket artist Tony Sarg. My commission was to use them to create something new. While Sarg died some 16 years before I was born, I felt while working with his illustrations that he was right beside me. I felt the delight in his drawings- -cows jumping over moons, Pinnocchio riding a whale, and in each little nook and cranny, a surprise. In bringing Tony Sarg back to life, I wanted to bring a sense of playfulness to each piece, and so each box has it’s own little surprise built in. I called these “Lost and Found Boxes” because the images created over half a century ago were lost and like the treasures they are, have been found.
